SOUTH AFRICA MINE DUMP COLLAPSE KILLS 14 SUSPECTED ILLEGAL MINERS

TUE 11 AUG 2026 AFRICA

At least 14 suspected illegal miners were killed and eight injured when a mine dump collapsed near Rustenburg in South Africa's North West province on Monday night, according to provincial police commissioner Arthur Peter Adams. Search and rescue operations were under way for an unknown number of people who may still be trapped at the site. The collapse occurred as the miners were digging for platinum group metals at a disused dump on a private company's property.

The injured miners are from Lesotho, whilst the nationality of those killed had yet to be confirmed at the time of reporting. Illegal mining has long affected South Africa, ranging from small-scale extraction to operations controlled by organised criminal networks. Undocumented miners frequently enter abandoned commercial mines to extract remaining deposits, often under the direction of violent gangs.

According to police, illegal mining costs the government and the mining industry hundreds of millions of dollars annually in lost sales, taxes and royalties. The practice has persisted for decades despite enforcement efforts. Adams did not provide a timeline for when rescue operations would be concluded or when a final casualty count would be established.
