DANIEL BERGER WITHDRAWS FROM FEDEX ST. JUDE CHAMPIONSHIP

TUE 11 AUG 2026 GOLF

Daniel Berger has withdrawn from the FedEx St. Jude Championship due to a back injury, reducing the field to 69 players for the opening event of the FedEx Cup playoffs at TPC Southwind in Memphis. Berger qualified for the tournament at number 60 in the FedExCup standings but did not commit to competing. The PGA Tour confirmed the withdrawal but released no further details regarding the severity or expected duration of the injury. Because the playoffs operate without an alternate list, unlike regular-season tournaments, his vacant spot will not be filled.

Berger is a four-time PGA Tour winner who did not play in the Wyndham Championship, the final regular-season event, yet maintained his qualifying position. The 69-man field represents an unusual configuration for the championship, though such a field size is not unprecedented in the event's history. The tournament will proceed to trim the field to the top 50 players for the next stage of the playoffs. Berger experienced a similar outcome last year, when he withdrew from the BMW Championship after sustaining a finger injury during his swing.

The FedEx St. Jude Championship carries a purse of $20 million and opened with a field that included returning competitors such as Rory McIlroy, who did not participate in the previous year's playoffs. The competition at TPC Southwind will determine which players advance to the subsequent playoff event.
