BRAD PITT SAYS HE DRINKS IN MODERATION AFTER SEVEN YEARS SOBER
Brad Pitt has stated that he returned to drinking alcohol in moderation following seven years of complete sobriety. The actor told Esquire in an interview published on Monday that he had been sober since 2016 but subsequently resumed consuming wine, though in what he described as a restrained manner. Pitt said he had initially become overconfident about his abstinence but recognised that drinking in large quantities was not suitable for him, adding that he can manage small amounts provided he remains disciplined.
Pitt stopped drinking in 2016 following his separation from Angelina Jolie. He previously credited Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with helping him maintain sobriety and thanked his friend Bradley Cooper during his 2020 Academy Awards acceptance speech for supporting his recovery. In a June 2025 appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Pitt described his early sobriety as a transformative period in which he found value in sharing experiences with others in recovery.
In the same interview, Pitt discussed difficult periods in his life, stating that he had once experienced suicidal thoughts whilst navigating family matters. He said the pain of that time felt so severe that he could understand the appeal of suicide as relief, though he emphasised he had not intended to act on those thoughts. Pitt characterised that period as one during which he needed significant personal change.
