EUROMILLIONS WINNER KILLED IN BICYCLE COLLISION IN ESSEX

TUE 11 AUG 2026 CRIME

Anthony Canty, a £1 million EuroMillions winner, died in hospital four days after being struck by a black Ford Ka whilst cycling on Maldon Road in Tiptree, Essex. Essex Police responded to reports of the collision at 6.30am on 21 May. An 18-year-old man remains under investigation and inquiries continue, according to the force. Mr Canty's widow, Kate, released a tribute through police on Tuesday describing him as "an amazing husband and the best dad".

Kate Canty said the family was "completely broken" by his death and that Mr Canty would "never get to meet our unborn baby". She described him as a hardworking, loving family man who was always willing to help others. Mr Canty had won the lottery weeks after performing CPR on a police officer who collapsed on a bus in April 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdown. The officer was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care. Mr Canty remained in contact with the officer's family after the incident, dropping off fruit and flowers.

Kate Canty said she would ensure their children grew up understanding what "an incredible man and amazing dad" their father was. She added that the family took comfort in knowing how loved he had been. Essex Police has not released further details about the circumstances of the collision or the progress of the investigation.
