PAUL SCHOLES URGES MANCHESTER UNITED TO SIGN CRISTIAN ROMERO
Paul Scholes has called on Manchester United to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero before the summer transfer window closes. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said United's current centre-backs are not of sufficient quality and that the club should pursue two defensive signings. He described Romero as capable of being "a very good centre-half" despite acknowledging disciplinary concerns, and suggested that manager Michael Carrick could help manage those issues.
Manchester United conceded 50 goals in the Premier League last season, a total that exceeded Brighton and Sunderland's defensive records. The club have prioritised midfield reinforcement during the current transfer window, signing midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50m and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35m. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow joined on a free transfer from Leeds United, making him the club's only other signing to date. United finished third in the Premier League and qualified for Champions League football.
Romero, an Argentina international, is reported to be preparing to leave Tottenham this summer. Scholes is the latest figure to weigh in on potential transfer targets for the club as the window enters its final stages.
