DENNY HAMLIN STARTS LAST AFTER NASCAR PENALISES UNAPPROVED BRAKE MODIFICATION

TUE 11 AUG 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

Denny Hamlin, who held the championship lead before the Iowa Corn 350, started the race near the back of the 36-car grid after NASCAR discovered an unapproved modification to his car's brake cooling ducts. The modification had been made overnight by his crew chief Chris Gayle in response to brake failures during Saturday practice. Hamlin's brakes had failed after two laps during practice, with the pad compound unable to withstand the heat generated at Iowa Speedway. Multiple drivers faced identical brake issues, including Chase Briscoe, Riley Herbst, Bubba Wallace and drivers associated with JGR and 23XI Racing.

Iowa Speedway presents unique brake challenges as the fastest short track on the circuit, with high speeds and short straightaways that prevent brake rotors from cooling adequately between corners. The same brake pad compound had performed without problems across approximately 20 previous races. When Hamlin requested permission to change the brake pads before racing, NASCAR declined. According to Hamlin's account on his podcast, NASCAR stated it would impose an even more severe penalty if he refused to compete with the original brake specification.

The cooling duct modification did not resolve the problem; Hamlin's brakes failed again by lap three of the race. Hamlin stated that the high speeds at Iowa combine with insufficient cooling time to generate excessive heat in the brake system, distinguishing the track from other venues where the same components function normally.
