BEARS SIGN WRIGHT TO $116M EXTENSION, CUTTING CAP SPACE
The Chicago Bears signed right tackle Darnell Wright to a four-year, $116 million contract extension that includes $93 million in guaranteed money, according to reporting from 10 August 2026. Wright will receive $42 million guaranteed upon signing. The extension makes Wright the highest-paid right tackle in the National Football League. Bears general manager Ryan Poles stated that the team was "excited that Darnell will remain a cornerstone of our franchise as we work toward creating sustained success".
Wright entered the 2026 season in the fourth year of his rookie contract after the Bears had already exercised his fifth-year option. According to Spotrac salary cap data, the extension reduces the Bears' available 2026 salary cap space by $3.8 million whilst creating more than $9.6 million in cap space for the 2027 season. The Bears were reported to have operated with one of the league's smaller cap cushions entering training camp; post-extension figures showed approximately $5 million in Top-51 cap space available.
The timing of the extension creates constraints during training camp preparation for the regular season. The Bears retain limited financial flexibility for unforeseen circumstances including preseason injuries, player replacements, waiver claims, veteran signings, practice-squad elevations, potential trades and emergency roster moves during the season. Wright was credited with helping quarterback Caleb Williams reduce his sack total during the 2025 season.
