BEN SHELTON DEFEATS FONSECA AT CANADIAN OPEN
Ben Shelton progressed to the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open in Montreal after defeating Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6(3). Shelton's girlfriend, Trinity Rodman of the United States women's national football team and Washington Spirit, made an unannounced visit to his hotel room on the day of the match. Rodman shared footage of the surprise on Instagram. During the match, Shelton played a shot that was selected as Shot of the Day by Tennis Channel, with both Rodman and fellow player Arthur Fils visibly impressed.
Shelton described the conditions as difficult, stating that both he and Fonseca struggled to find their footing on many balls. He credited his ability to close out tight moments in straight sets as key to his performance. Shelton noted that competing against a high-quality player like Fonseca represented a significant achievement. The victory maintained his title defence in the tournament.
Shelton will face Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals as he continues his campaign for the title. Rodman's surprise visit provided personal support during what Shelton characterised as a serious week of competition. The player attributed his growing consistency to his success in advancing through the tournament.
