BURNHAM FACES PRESSURE OVER NORTH SEA OIL AND GAS DECISIONS

MON 10 AUG 2026 UK POLITICS

Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces competing pressures as consultations on two North Sea drilling projects near completion. Environmental groups have urged him to refuse permission for oil and gas production at Jackdaw, a gas field 150 miles east of Aberdeen, and Rosebank, an oil field north-west of Shetland. The consultation on Jackdaw closes on Monday, with the Rosebank consultation closing a week later. Opposition politicians, the oil and gas industry and US President Donald Trump have called for permission to be granted, citing job protection and potential household bill reductions.

A court quashed Conservative-era approvals for both fields last year following a legal challenge from Greenpeace, placing the decision with the Labour Government. Environmental groups argue that the remaining oil and gas in the North Sea would make little difference to energy prices, which are set internationally, or to energy security, whilst increasing carbon emissions. Lang Banks, director of WWF Scotland, described approving new developments as "irresponsible" given summer heatwaves and wildfires near Aberdeen. Ami McCarthy, head of politics at Greenpeace UK, called attempts to extract remaining North Sea reserves "beyond ridiculous" whilst global climate impacts continue.

Labour's own party divisions on the issue present an additional challenge for Burnham. Environmental groups warn that watering down climate commitments could damage Labour's ability to retain voters who have switched to the Greens since 2024. The decision will determine whether the Government prioritises environmental targets against industry and opposition arguments regarding economic benefits and energy costs.
