LIONS SIGN JOSH DOBBS AS BACKUP QUARTERBACK

MON 10 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Josh Dobbs to a one-year deal worth $1.425 million, with $475,000 guaranteed. Dobbs joins the team following the departure of Teddy Bridgewater, who has been placed on the reserve/retired list. According to NFL Network, Dobbs will serve as the likely backup to starting quarterback Jared Goff. The 31-year-old becomes the second quarterback on the Lions' active roster, alongside undrafted free agent Luke Altmyer, a former player at the University of Illinois.

Dobbs was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over the past decade, he has held positions with eight organisations: the Jaguars, Browns, Titans, Cardinals, Vikings, 49ers, and Patriots, in addition to the Steelers. He previously spent 16 days on the Lions' practice squad in 2022 before being signed to the Tennessee Titans' active roster. Dobbs has appeared in 27 regular-season games across his career, recording 15 starts.

The signing addresses an immediate gap in Detroit's quarterback depth chart created by Bridgewater's unexpected retirement. Dobbs brings extensive experience as a backup and emergency starter across multiple franchises. The Lions currently have Goff as their primary quarterback for the remainder of the season.
