RICKY GERVAIS CELEBRATES ALLEY CATS REACHING NETFLIX NUMBER ONE
Ricky Gervais has said he is "never been so happy" after his animated series Alley Cats reached the number one position on Netflix. The six-part comedy, which marks Gervais's first television comedy project since the conclusion of his drama series After Life in 2022, follows a group of feral cats attempting to help a lost kitten find its way home. Gervais voices Gus, a cynical orange tabby cat, and performs alongside frequent collaborators including Tom Basden, Diane Morgan, David Earl and Andrew Brooke. Gervais posted on Instagram to celebrate the show's chart success, writing "I've never been so happy" and referring to his fans as the "best fans in the f***ing world".
The series has attracted widespread critical disapproval. A review in The Independent awarded it one star, with the critic questioning whether Gervais could produce work comparable to his earlier successes. The Telegraph's reviewer gave the show zero stars, describing it as "staggeringly unfunny" and calling it "the worst thing to happen to cats since Cats". A Metro review expressed surprise that Gervais, known for earlier comedy work, could produce what the reviewer termed "lazy claptrap".
The contrast between critical reception and Netflix viewership rankings illustrates the divergence that can occur between professional reviewers and audience engagement on streaming platforms. Gervais's public response focused on the audience response rather than critical assessments of the show's quality.
