HARRY POTTER FANS FORCE GREENLINK PROJECT TO DIVERT FROM WELSH BEACH

SUN 09 AUG 2026

Developers diverted a £430m energy infrastructure project away from Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire following pressure from Harry Potter fans concerned about a fictional character's grave site. The Greenlink interconnector was originally planned to land at the beach, carrying solar and wind power via cable to the Republic of Ireland. The beach served as the filming location for a scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part One in which the character Dobby was laid to rest, and fans have since left tributes at the spot, including painted stones.

Simon Ludlam, chief executive of advisory firm Etchea Energy and director of the Greenlink project, stated that the plans had been agreed with authorities, landowners and local residents before public outcry emerged. A BBC Wales interview about the cable route generated hundreds of phone calls from fans objecting to the interconnector passing through the memorial site. Mr Ludlam recalled that project staff determined they needed to respond to the public concern, despite initial uncertainty about the nature of the complaints.

The diversion of the project's landfall point was confirmed as a result of fan pressure, marking an unusual instance of fictional cultural significance influencing major infrastructure planning. Greenlink remains a substantial cross-border energy initiative connecting renewable power generation in the UK with Irish consumers, though its British terminal was relocated from its original site.
