ST MIRREN TOP SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP AFTER TWO OPENING WINS
St Mirren lead the Scottish Premiership table following victories over Falkirk and St Johnstone in the opening two matches of the season. The Paisley club defeated St Johnstone 1-0 in their second fixture and have not conceded a goal in either game. The early success marks a sharp turnaround from the previous season, when St Mirren narrowly avoided relegation by winning a play-off.
Manager Craig McLeish attributed the improved start to a return to basics and defensive solidity. McLeish stated he was using last season's play-off experience as motivation and emphasised the importance of fitness, energy and relentless standards. Goalkeeper Jacob Chapman, a new recruit, made a penalty save in the second half of the St Johnstone match, with Killian Phillips subsequently converting a penalty. McLeish told BBC Scotland that six points from six matches provided a strong foundation for the campaign ahead.
Chapman reflected on the team's defensive approach, noting that all players contributed to preventing chances. He characterised the early performances as representative of "what a great season looks like at the start", though acknowledged that opening success did not guarantee overall achievement. St Mirren won the Scottish League Cup last season, their most recent silverware.
