SPACE STORMS POSE RISK TO TRAIN SIGNAL SYSTEMS

WED 03 JUN 2026 SPACE

Geomagnetic storms caused by solar activity can interfere with train signalling systems and create conditions for serious accidents. Researchers have identified a direct link between space weather events and the disruption of rail infrastructure on Earth. The findings raise safety concerns for rail networks that rely on electrically dependent signal controls. Scientists have confirmed that the electromagnetic effects of these storms are capable of triggering false readings or failures in trackside equipment.

Geomagnetic storms occur when charged particles from the sun interact with Earth's magnetic field, generating electrical currents across the planet's surface. These induced currents can enter rail infrastructure through the tracks themselves, which act as conductors. Signal systems that depend on low-level electrical currents to detect train positions are particularly vulnerable. A disrupted signal can incorrectly indicate a clear line when a train is present, or fail to register a train's location entirely.

Rail operators and space weather agencies are now examining how monitoring and warning systems can be improved to address the risk. Several national rail networks use ageing signalling infrastructure that was not designed with geomagnetic interference in mind. Space weather forecasting bodies already issue alerts for events that affect power grids and satellite systems. Extending those warnings to rail operators is among the steps under consideration.
