TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PAYS $1.2BN TO CANCEL OFFSHORE WIND LEASES

FRI 07 AUG 2026

The Trump administration has reached a settlement worth $1.2 billion with German energy company RWE to cancel offshore wind farm leases, according to statements from both parties. The agreement involves wind projects that would have been developed off the coasts of California, Louisiana and New York. The settlement funds are drawn from the Department of the Interior and utilise taxpayer dollars. RWE stated that the deal would allow it to "direct resources toward energy projects that can be advanced with certainty".

As part of the agreement, RWE has committed $900 million to acquire a 16 per cent stake in a Louisiana liquified natural gas project operated by Australian company Woodside Energy. RWE has also signed a separate agreement worth $300 million to develop a pipeline of 15 natural gas peaker plants across the country. RWE originally purchased the New York lease for approximately $1.1 billion under the Biden administration, and the California and Louisiana leases for around $163 million combined. Interior Secretary Doug Burgess stated that the administration appreciates the company's "voluntary investment in projects that strengthen our nation's energy security".

One report indicated that the Trump administration has now spent approximately $4 billion paying companies to cancel offshore wind projects, making this the fifth such settlement. The shift redirects renewable energy investment toward fossil fuel projects, representing a significant change in federal energy policy from the previous administration's approach to offshore wind development.
