ARSENAL MAKE CONTACT OVER TOTTENHAM DEFENDER ROMERO

Arsenal have made contact regarding a potential move for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Gunners have begun their summer transfer window activity with the signings of Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, though Meslier is expected to serve as backup rather than compete for a starting position. Arsenal's interest in Romero comes as the club seeks defensive reinforcement following a back injury sustained by William Saliba after the World Cup.

Tottenham are reportedly unwilling to entertain offers from Arsenal for Romero, preferring to conduct any sale abroad if the defender departs. Atletico Madrid are understood to be actively pushing to secure Romero's signature this summer. Romero has been described as "one of the best centre-backs in the world" by former Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi. Despite Arsenal's existing defensive options including Piero Hincapié, Riccardo Calafiori, Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães, the club appears committed to strengthening at centre-back.

Arsenal's summer recruitment has been gradual thus far, with the club initially pursuing Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior before the Brazilian signed a new contract with the La Liga club. The direction of Arsenal's transfer strategy for attacking reinforcement remains unclear following that development.
