CHRISTIAN GONZALEZ EXCHANGES WORDS WITH AJ BROWN AT PATRIOTS CAMP
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and wide receiver AJ Brown engaged in a heated exchange during New England Patriots training camp on Thursday. During team drills, quarterback Drake Maye targeted Brown, and Gonzalez broke up the pass before pointing at the receiver, prompting a verbal exchange between the two. The incident followed an earlier Monday confrontation during red-zone drills in which Brown made a catch despite tight coverage from Gonzalez, with the exchange becoming intense enough that a fight appeared possible. Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte intervened to separate Brown and Gonzalez before the situation escalated further.
Gonzalez told reporters after the Thursday incident that he does not remain silent when trash-talking begins at practice. When asked whether the exchange with Brown served as a reminder about his presence, Gonzalez stated: "He's not gonna forget me." Boutte, speaking to media, explained his decision to intervene, saying he heard Gonzalez make a comment about Brown being a grown man and decided to step in before matters worsened. The Patriots acquired Brown earlier this year from the Philadelphia Eagles following the receiver's request for a trade. Brown has recorded four consecutive seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards.
Gonzalez, known for remaining relatively quiet during games and at practice, has earned a reputation as one of the Patriots' key defensive players. The cornerback is positioned to sign a contract extension with the team. The incidents reflect the competitive intensity present during the Patriots' pre-season training camp as the team prepares for the 2026 season.
