OPENAI PLANS RING-SHAPED SMART SPEAKER PRICED AT £240-£320
OpenAI is developing a ring-shaped smart speaker device designed to be portable and battery-powered, according to reports citing sources familiar with the company's plans. The device, approximately the size of a hockey puck, will feature a camera system and environmental sensors but will not include a screen. According to sources, the hardware will include moving components intended to make the product more lifelike and engaging to users.
The price point for the device is reportedly between $300 and $400 (approximately £240 to £320). OpenAI acquired the startup io, led by designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion to support its hardware development efforts. The portable form factor is intended to allow users to carry the device around their home and place it in different locations such as bedside tables or kitchen counters. The reported price would position the device significantly higher than most competing smart speakers on the market.
OpenAI has not confirmed details of the device or its specifications. Sources told reporters that the company anticipates launching the hardware in 2027. The company has not announced an official release date, pricing or confirmed feature set.
