ISRAELI ARTILLERY STRIKES LEBANESE TOWN AS ROME TALKS CONCLUDE

THU 06 AUG 2026 EUROPE

The Israeli army fired artillery shells on the town of Hadatha in Bint Jbeil district, southern Lebanon, on Thursday, according to Lebanon's National News Agency. The attack occurred as negotiators from Israel and Lebanon concluded a new round of talks in Rome aimed at establishing a framework agreement between the countries. The timing coincided with an escalation in Israeli military operations against Lebanon, reports indicate.

Rights groups characterised an earlier Israeli attack in southern Lebanon as an apparent war crime. That attack killed journalist Amal Khalil and wounded another reporter, according to statements issued on Thursday. The designation of war crimes came from international human rights organisations responding to the killing of the journalist earlier this year.

The artillery strike on Hadatha represents a continuation of cross-border military activity in the region. Israel has intensified attacks on Lebanese territory whilst diplomatic negotiations between the two governments remain ongoing. The dual track of military escalation and diplomatic engagement reflects the complex nature of Israeli-Lebanese relations at present.
