UK HEALTH SECURITY AGENCY ISSUES YELLOW HEAT ALERTS FOR ENGLAND AND WALES

THU 06 AUG 2026

The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat health alerts for large parts of England as temperatures are forecast to rise significantly over the coming days. Temperatures are expected to climb from Saturday, potentially reaching between 30C and 33C across central and southern England and parts of Wales by next Tuesday. The alerts will be active from 9am on Saturday, 8 August, until 9pm on Tuesday, 11 August, covering regions including London, the South East, and the Midlands.

The warnings highlight potential significant impacts on health and social care services, with a possible rise in deaths particularly among elderly people and those with existing health conditions. This summer has already experienced record-breaking heatwaves, with official figures suggesting over 2,800 excess deaths recorded during the period. Last month was the driest July for England and Wales since 1836, according to recorded data. Temperatures had dropped closer to average levels for this time of year from Wednesday before the forecast rise.

Yellow heat health alerts are issued by the UK Health Security Agency to signal when temperature increases pose a notable risk to public health. The four-day alert period reflects the expected duration of the elevated temperatures across the affected regions. Members of the public, particularly vulnerable groups, are typically advised to stay hydrated and seek cool environments during such alerts.
