FOUR ARRESTED AS TWO OLDHAM BROTHELS SHUT BY POLICE

THU 06 AUG 2026 CRIME

Four people have been arrested after police uncovered two brothels in Oldham and issued closure orders on the properties. Officers attended an address on Balfour Street on Monday 27 July, where they discovered a brothel and detained a man who attempted to flee via the rear of the house. Two people were arrested on suspicion of controlling prostitution for gain at that location. A further two women were arrested on Tuesday 28 July at an address on Miriam Street and subsequently bailed.

Residents, councillors and partner agencies had reported suspicious activity at both properties before police action was taken. According to Greater Manchester Police, men were observed arriving at the houses during daytime and nighttime hours, remaining for short periods before departing. The force stated the activity had caused "significant distress" to neighbours. A 48-hour closure notice was authorised at each address following police attendance.

Following applications to the court, three-month closure orders have been granted for both the Balfour Street and Miriam Street properties. It is now a criminal offence to enter or remain in either property during the period of the closure orders. Amie Whitehead, Neighbourhood Inspector for Oldham South & West, stated that officers had "responded to reports, worked with partners and gathered evidence to take enforcement action". Investigations continue into the matter.
