STEVE BELICHICK ON MEDICAL LEAVE FROM UNC FOOTBALL

Steve Belichick, defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina, is on indefinite medical leave from the football programme. Bill Belichick, the head coach and Steve's father, announced the absence on Thursday without disclosing further details. Bill Belichick stated that the team "look forward to getting him back as soon as possible" ahead of the season opener on 29 August in Ireland. No interim defensive coordinator will be appointed; the coaching staff will handle defensive duties collectively.

Steve Belichick joined UNC in 2025 when his father took the head coaching role. Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator at the University of Washington in 2024. He previously worked with Bill Belichick at the New England Patriots from 2012 through 2023. Michael Lombardi, the programme's general manager, is also currently absent due to an internal investigation.

The Tar Heels will begin their season without their primary defensive coordinator in place. Bill Belichick has not indicated when Steve Belichick might return to the sideline or whether he will be available for the Ireland fixture.
