INDIAN COURT SENTENCES TEJPAL TO 10 YEARS FOR 2013 RAPE
An Indian court has sentenced Tarun Tejpal, former editor of Tehelka magazine, to 10 years in prison for raping a junior colleague, overturning his acquittal from 2021. The Goa bench of Bombay High Court convicted Tejpal under sections of Indian law pertaining to rape and sexual harassment on 6 August 2026. The court also ordered him to pay fines totalling more than 1 million rupees (approximately $10,500). Tejpal was given two weeks to surrender to authorities.
The allegations emerged in November 2013 when a female colleague accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her in a lift at a five-star hotel during Tehelka's international conference in Goa. Tejpal initially characterised the incident as "a lapse of judgement" and "a misreading of the situation", stating he would take six months' leave as "penance". The Goa government subsequently challenged a 2021 sessions court acquittal that had dismissed all charges, leading to the Bombay High Court's decision to overturn that dismissal. Tejpal has denied the accusations and said he would appeal to the Supreme Court.
The case emerged during a period of heightened public attention to sexual violence against women in India. In December 2012, mass protests followed the gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi, prompting the government to strengthen rape laws. Tehelka, which Tejpal co-founded in 2000, had gained prominence for investigative journalism including undercover operations that exposed corruption among senior officials. Tejpal was arrested in 2013 and spent seven months in jail before the Supreme Court granted bail.
