UK NATIONAL DEBT PASSES £3 TRILLION MILESTONE
Britain's national debt has exceeded £3 trillion for the first time, according to figures from the TaxPayers' Alliance. The Office for National Statistics recorded net debt at £2.99 trillion at the end of June. The TaxPayers' Alliance calculation puts the total at approximately 95% of gross domestic product, or more than £100,000 per household.
The Office for Budget Responsibility had previously estimated this threshold would be crossed in September. Current figures suggest the milestone has been reached ahead of that projection. The TaxPayers' Alliance stated that the government is adding to national debt at a rate of £4,270 per second, equivalent to £369 million daily. July of the previous year alone added more than £20 billion to the debt total.
The timing reflects government spending patterns during the current financial year. The Treasury is scheduled to present a spending statement in October, which may involve additional borrowing commitments. The debt-to-GDP ratio and per-household debt figure underscore the scale of the public finances position as the government enters the autumn months.
