US SENATE CONFIRMS ERICA SCHWARTZ AS CDC DIRECTOR

The United States Senate confirmed Dr Erica Schwartz as director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in a 51-44 vote on Wednesday. Schwartz becomes the first permanent CDC director since Susan Monarez was fired last year over vaccine policy disputes. She is President Donald Trump's third nominee for the position in 18 months. Tim Kaine of Virginia was the sole Democrat to vote in favour of her confirmation.

Schwartz, a navy veteran who served as deputy surgeon general during Trump's first term, faced questioning at her confirmation hearing about whether she would prioritise scientific consensus or administration pressure. At the hearing, she stated she would "never betray the science" when asked about her approach to vaccine policy. Republican Bill Cassidy, chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labour and Pensions, pressed Schwartz on whether she would resist attempts to undermine vaccination, to which she replied that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr "will absolutely allow me to be CDC director". Cassidy subsequently announced his support for her nomination. Trump's first CDC nominee, former Florida congressman David Weldon, was withdrawn before his confirmation hearing in March 2025.

The CDC has experienced significant staffing losses, with about 3,000 workers laid off or resigning in recent years. According to reports, many departing staff expressed frustration with vaccine policies promoted by Kennedy that diverge from established scientific and public health positions. Dr Georges Benjamin of the American Public Health Association stated that the CDC "desperately needs stability, experienced leadership and a steadfast commitment to science" following the period of organisational turmoil. Public health experts have expressed cautious optimism about Schwartz's appointment.
