TRUMP LEGAL TEAM SEEKS TO BLOCK BBC ACCESS TO FINANCIAL RECORDS

WED 05 AUG 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Donald Trump's legal team filed a motion on Wednesday to temporarily pause a court order requiring the president to hand over detailed financial records to the BBC. The records relate to Trump's lawsuit against the British broadcaster, in which he claims a 2024 documentary caused financial harm to his business interests. A Miami-based judge ruled in July that Trump must begin providing the records by 6 August. The financial disclosure would reveal details of hundreds of businesses owned by Trump's family trust.

Trump's attorneys argued that the BBC had demanded a "shockingly broad amount of information based on clearly political motivations". The legal team also asked the court to amend the lawsuit to focus instead on alleged "reputation harm" caused by the documentary, which would limit the scope of required disclosures. The BBC documentary, entitled Trump, A Second Chance, included a scene that spliced lines from a speech Trump delivered on 6 January 2021 in a way that, according to Trump's legal team, misrepresented his statements about the Capitol attack. Trump filed the $10 billion defamation suit against the broadcaster over the film.

Trump has pursued multiple legal actions against media outlets recently. His justice department issued and then recalled subpoenas to New York Times journalists following reporting on security concerns with Air Force One. Trump's attorneys also moved to send a $10 billion defamation suit against the Wall Street Journal to trial after the outlet reported on a letter the president allegedly contributed to a birthday book for financier Jeffrey Epstein in 2003. Financial disclosures indicated Trump earned more than $2.2 billion during his first year back in office.
