JAXSON DART THROWS BALL AT CORNERBACK HELMET IN GIANTS DRILL
Quarterback Jaxson Dart threw a ball at cornerback Greg Newsome's helmet following a rushing touchdown during a red-zone drill at New York Giants training camp. The incident occurred at The Greenbrier during a practice session. Newsome did not respond positively to the gesture. Giants head coach John Harbaugh addressed the matter after practice.
Harbaugh stated that the action would constitute a 15-yard penalty for taunting under National Football League rules. In response, Harbaugh moved back the extra-point attempt by 15 yards as a training-camp consequence. Harbaugh indicated that Dart should understand the in-game ramifications of such behaviour without requiring explicit instruction from coaching staff.
The incident highlights Harbaugh's approach to managing competitive intensity during practice. Harbaugh drew a distinction between competitive drive and what he characterised as unnecessary theatrics. The coach's response was designed to reinforce the distinction between the two during training-camp sessions.
