GB NEWS CO-OWNER PAUL MARSHALL DONATES £28M TO CHURCH OF ENGLAND BODIES

Sir Paul Marshall, co-owner of British television channel GB News, has donated at least £28 million to influential Church of England institutions that support climate action. Analysis of accounts filed with the Charity Commission shows that at least £13 million of that total went to Holy Trinity Brompton and the Church Revitalisation Trust via Marshall's Sequoia Trust between 2018 and 2025. Marshall is a hedge fund manager and self-described Christian who recently stated that the United Kingdom had been infected by "climate derangement syndrome". GB News has faced accusations of broadcasting climate change denial.

Holy Trinity Brompton, known as HTB, is the largest Church of England congregation with around 4,000 members and is home to the Alpha Course, an evangelical programme that has reached 37 million people across more than 175 countries. Marshall has been a member of HTB's congregation since 1997. The Church Revitalisation Trust, also known as the Re-vitalise Trust, operates from HTB and has established more than 100 evangelical churches across the United Kingdom. Marshall serves as a director of the Church Revitalisation Trust.

Christian leaders have raised concerns about the donations, stating that Marshall's climate views and those broadcast on GB News are "in direct opposition" to the Church of England's position that responding to the climate crisis is central to Christian responsibility. The Reverend Dr Darrell Hannah, chair of Operation Noah, a leading UK Christian climate charity, said Marshall's influence "cannot go unchallenged." Operation Noah played a significant role in persuading nearly every UK Christian denomination to divest from fossil fuels. Some critics have expressed concern that the donations could shape the recipient institutions' positions on the climate crisis.
