MAN WAKES NEIGHBOURS AS LIGHTNING STRIKE SETS HOUSE ABLAZE
A man roused his neighbours in the early hours after a lightning strike ignited the roof of a semi-detached house in Glanaman, Carmarthenshire. Stuart Dunn, a primary school teacher, spotted flames through his bathroom window and ran across the road to alert the occupant of the burning property. The owner, who had been asleep downstairs with her dog, was unaware the fire had taken hold on her roof. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews were dispatched to the two-storey property at approximately 23:20 BST on 27 May.
Dunn said he believed the weather had tripped the electricity supply in the area, and a combination of thunder and repeated lightning flashes had kept him awake. He initially mistook the orange glow through his frosted bathroom window for a streetlight before realising it was flames. After alerting the homeowner and calling 999, Dunn turned his attention to a neighbouring property where a resident was sleeping alone. That neighbour had an eye mask on and ear plugs in, and Dunn had to use a torch to shine light through her window before she woke. He also found windows open at the top of her property when he went around to the rear.
The moment lightning struck the roof was captured on camera by another local resident. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews attended the scene and responded to the incident. The fire affected a two-storey, semi-detached property, and multiple neighbours emerged from their homes during the incident.
