TRASHCAN SINATRAS GUITARIST JOHN DOUGLAS DIES AGED 63
John Douglas, guitarist and vocalist of Scottish indie rock band Trashcan Sinatras, has died aged 63 following a brief illness. Douglas died in the early hours of Monday 3 August 2026, surrounded by loved ones, the band announced on social media. He had been a member of Trashcan Sinatras since 1986 and appeared on all seven of the band's studio albums. The band described him as "our dear friend and brother".
Douglas was born in Irvine and played on the group's latest album, 'Ever the Optimist', which was released on 31 July 2026, just days before his death. The album marked the band's first full-length release in a decade. In a recent interview with Spill Magazine, Douglas reflected on the band's 40th anniversary live performance at Irvine's Harbour Arts Centre, which provided footage for the new album's title track and reunited all five members on stage for the first time in almost seven years. He described the performance as "very emotional" and said the band had treasured every moment of being together.
Tributes from fans followed the announcement of Douglas's death. One fan wrote on Instagram: "Talent, heart, kindness…he had it all." Another noted that the timing of 'Ever the Optimist''s release appeared bittersweet given Douglas's passing so soon after. The band's statement said Douglas "died peacefully" with "his beautiful voice and songs filling the room".
