DR CONGO OPENS LARGEST EBOLA TREATMENT FACILITY AS OUTBREAK INTENSIFIES

WED 05 AUG 2026 NORTH AMERICA

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is nearing completion of its largest Ebola treatment facility as health authorities work to contain an outbreak. The World Health Organisation has described the outbreak as intensifying at an "exceptional" pace. As of 30 July, the WHO reported 3,605 confirmed Ebola cases and 1,587 deaths in the country. Officials stated that the expanded treatment capacity will strengthen response efforts and improve patient care as the outbreak continues to spread.

The current outbreak represents the largest recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A new vaccine trial targeting the Bundibugyo species of Ebola has been launched, according to the World Health Organisation. The vaccine trial results may require months to emerge. The World Health Organisation said efforts are advancing towards enhanced treatment options alongside vaccine development.

The opening of the treatment facility marks a significant expansion of the country's capacity to manage confirmed cases. The World Health Organisation indicated that both treatment infrastructure and vaccine research form part of the broader response strategy. Enhanced treatment capacity and vaccine development are proceeding concurrently as the outbreak continues.
