TAYLOR FRITZ WINS CITI OPEN AFTER THREE FINAL LOSSES
Taylor Fritz defeated Rafael Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 in the Mubadala DC Open final to claim his first title of the season. Fritz survived match points in the first-set tiebreak before converting his fifth match point in the second set to close out the match. The victory ended a run of three consecutive final losses for the American this season. Fritz's win marked his 11th ATP Tour title overall and his first above ATP 250 level since winning Tokyo in 2022.
Fritz faced stiff competition throughout the tournament. He defeated Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round, recorded his 250th career tour-level hard-court win in that match, and beat Kamil Majchrzak 6-3, 6-4 without facing a break point. In the quarterfinals, Fritz saved a match point against Alex Michelsen whilst managing a late knee injury concern before winning 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6). Jodar, 19, was competing in his first season on the professional tour.
Fritz became the second American man in 18 years to win the Washington title, following Sebastian Korda's victory in 2024. During the trophy presentation, Fritz praised Jodar's performance and potential, telling the young Spaniard he would continue to improve. Fritz also thanked his coaching team, acknowledging that he had given similar speeches recently but "not as the winner". According to reports, fellow tennis players Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens sent congratulations following the victory.
