AIR INDIA FLIGHT ENCOUNTERS SEVERE TURBULENCE, MULTIPLE INJURED
Air India flight AI2379, travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi, India, encountered severe turbulence during its descent on 4 August. The aircraft experienced a sudden drop in altitude whilst descending towards Delhi. The flight landed safely, though several passengers and crew sustained injuries during the incident. One passenger described the aircraft suddenly tilting and moving for several minutes, resulting in injuries to multiple people including a baby.
Reports of the injury toll differ: local media reported two crew members and ten passengers sustained minor injuries, whilst another account put the number injured at twelve. Air India confirmed the in-flight turbulence event and stated that all passengers and crew safely disembarked. The airline said no serious injuries were reported, though a small number of people required medical assessment. Those injured were taken to a medical facility at the airport for examination. Images from the airport showed ambulances at the terminal gate and injured individuals being assisted in wheelchairs, some with visible bandages.
A passenger noted that turbulence is a common cause of severe injuries in aviation. The Airbus A320 aircraft had taken off from Phuket approximately 90 minutes before encountering the turbulence. Air India's confirmation of the incident marks the completion of the emergency response to the flight.
