TRUMP BACKS YANKEES MANAGER CASHMAN OVER TRADE MOVES
Donald Trump, President of the United States, expressed support for New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and the club's trade activities on Monday. Trump stated he had known Cashman "for a long time" and said "He's done a good job", according to reports. Trump also praised Randy Levine, describing him as "a great executive". Trump's comments came as the Yankees completed roster moves ahead of the trade deadline.
The Yankees acquired first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals on Sunday, sending four pitchers to Washington in exchange. The move addressed offensive needs created by injuries to key players including Aaron Judge, sidelined since early June with a stress fracture in his rib, and Giancarlo Stanton. Garcia told MLB.com he was "very fortunate for this opportunity", noting he was born in New York and had spent significant time there. Manager Aaron Boone set up a platoon arrangement with Garcia rotating at first base and designated hitter against right-handed pitchers.
Cashman explained the trade rationale by reference to a subsequent move. He stated the Yankees sought to "upgrade the offence in any way, shape or form while waiting for important players to come back off the IL". Cashman noted that the platoon arrangement allowed Boone greater flexibility in matching pitching matchups than previously available. Garcia made his debut in Yankees colours following the trade.
