CARGO SHIP HIT BY UNKNOWN PROJECTILE IN STRAIT OF HORMUZ
The Minoan Pioneer, a dry bulk cargo ship sailing under Liberia's flag, was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz off Oman's coast on Tuesday, according to maritime security sources. The projectile reportedly struck the engine room, and a fire subsequently broke out in the accommodation area. The crew abandoned the vessel, and one seafarer—identified as the third engineer—is reported missing. British maritime security firm Vanguard stated that crew members were fighting the fire and required assistance.
The incident occurred in one of the world's most strategically significant shipping routes. The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman and handles a substantial portion of global maritime traffic. The identity of those responsible for the strike remains unknown. The attack comes amid broader regional tensions and discussions regarding control of shipping lanes through the waterway.
A senior Iranian source told Reuters that Iran is seeking control over inbound shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and visibility over outbound traffic, as part of discussions with Oman to reopen the waterway. The source described this as "the general idea currently being discussed" but said Tehran was unlikely to change its position. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) confirmed the incident and maritime authorities continue to monitor the situation.
