GREG JAMES ANNOUNCES DEATH OF DOG BARNEY
Greg James, presenter of the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show, announced on Instagram on Monday 3 August that his chocolate Labrador, Barney, had been put to sleep. James stated he was "floored" by the news and said he would not present his show on Tuesday morning. In his post, James described the dog as "unbelievably daft farty brilliant" and asked followers not to send direct messages or mention Barney to him or his wife, Bella Mackie, for the time being.
Charlie Hedges presented the breakfast show in James's absence on Tuesday 4 August. Hedges told listeners she was sending "a massive hug" to James and relayed messages of support from the audience. Barney had been a regular feature on James's radio programme, appearing in a recurring segment titled "Barney, Are You There?!" and frequently featured in James's Instagram posts and videos.
James adopted Barney from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2019. The dog had become well-known to listeners of the breakfast show through its regular appearances on air and social media presence. Hedges encouraged listeners to continue sending supportive messages, which she said she would pass on to James.
