LARRY BERG VOTED MLS COMMISSIONER FROM 2027

TUE 04 AUG 2026

The Major League Football board of governors has voted to appoint Larry Berg, co-managing owner of Los Angeles FC, as the league's next commissioner. Berg will assume the role on 1 January 2027, succeeding Don Garber, who has held the position since 1999. The vote took place at MLS headquarters in Manhattan during a closed-door meeting on Monday. Berg will be the third commissioner in the league's 30-year history.

Berg is a senior adviser at private equity firm 26North and previously served as a partner at Apollo Global Management and chair of McGraw-Hill Education. He became an LAFC limited partner when the club launched in 2014 and was promoted to co-managing owner in 2016. He currently serves as co-chair of MLS's sporting and competition committee. Berg was selected over David Nathanson, whose background lay primarily in sports media and investment, including stakes in the Seattle Sounders, Angel City FC and the Seattle Kraken.

Garber will transition to the role of chairman following Berg's appointment, the league said, to provide continuity during what it described as a significant period for MLS. Berg is required to divest his LAFC shares as part of the transition. Under Berg's tenure as co-owner, LAFC has become one of the league's most valuable franchises, with Forbes estimating its valuation at $1.32 billion as of May, and the club was named Operations Club of the Year in 2023.
