CHRIS BOSH HOSPITALISED WITH PULMONARY EMBOLISM IN JANUARY

MON 03 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

Chris Bosh, a Hall of Famer and two-time NBA champion, revealed that he experienced a pulmonary embolism in January and spent a week in hospital. In an interview with Hoops Hype published on Monday, Bosh stated: "I almost dropped dead pretty much and came back to life. I'm not joking." He described the episode as occurring this past year and said he has since resumed taking anticoagulant medication daily whilst monitoring his condition. Bosh also offered public advice to Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs player whose 2024-25 season was cut short by a blood clot, urging him to remain adherent to his medical regimen.

Bosh, 42, suffered two blood clots during his playing career, which featured 11 All-Star appearances and two NBA championships with the Miami Heat alongside LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. A first pulmonary embolism in February 2015 forced him to miss the remainder of that season after a clot moved from his leg to his lung. A second blood clot in 2016 prompted Heat doctors to advise that his playing career was likely over, leading him to retire from basketball in 2019 after unsuccessful attempts to return. In a personal essay published on his Substack, Bosh described the January episode in detail, recounting how he collapsed whilst moving between his closet and bathroom after experiencing a sudden numbing sensation in his left leg and subsequently regained consciousness in a pool of blood.

Bosh stated that the condition will require ongoing management for the remainder of his life. He told Hoops Hype: "It only takes one more time" and reflected that his two career blood clots prevented him from continuing to play professionally. Wembanyama returned to action after his own blood clot to play 64 games last season, leading the Spurs to the Western Conference championship, the NBA Finals, and earning MVP finalist status alongside Defensive Player of the Year honours in his third NBA season.
