ALEXANDRA EALA WINS FIRST WTA TITLE AT WASHINGTON OPEN

MON 03 AUG 2026 W TENNIS

Alexandra Eala became the first Filipino to win a WTA singles title after defeating Jessica Pegula at the Washington Open. Eala won 4-6 6-4 6-0 in a final delayed from Sunday to Monday because of bad weather in the US capital. Rain and lightning forced postponement on Sunday, with play halted after Eala had taken a 2-1 lead in the second set. The match resumed on Monday, with Pegula winning only three additional games as Eala secured victory.

Eala, 21, was ranked 28th in the world before the final and will rise to a career-high 20th following her win. Pegula, 32, had previously won the Washington Open in 2019 and 2021. The victory extended Eala's unbeaten record against top-10 opponents to five consecutive matches, having defeated Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina twice, and Iga Swiatek in recent competition. Pegula described Eala as "the future of the tour" before the final.

Eala said after her victory that she felt "so much love" and described the match as "already a win" regardless of the outcome. She noted that securing her first title would not be her last achievement. Pegula acknowledged Eala's growing prominence on the professional circuit, telling her that the experience of facing such an emerging player represented progress in Eala's career development.
