UEFA THREATENS LEGAL ACTION AGAINST INFANTINO OVER WORLD CUP PLAN
UEFA sent a formal letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino warning that it was actively considering legal action, arbitration and regulatory complaints related to his proposed World Cup plan, according to the letter seen by The Telegraph. The letter, sent on Friday, also warned Infantino not to destroy documents connected to the proposal. The warning came after Infantino announced he was withdrawing the plan, which had sparked widespread opposition from multiple governing bodies including UEFA and CONCACAF.
Infantino's proposal involved selling stakes in the World Cup. He initially defended the plans by stating that "nobody is selling football", but withdrew them after receiving numerous objections from football's governing bodies. In a statement announcing the U-turn, Infantino said: "Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place." UEFA welcomed FIFA's decision to withdraw the plans whilst simultaneously releasing a statement saying they had lost all confidence in Infantino.
The letter represented UEFA's formal notification of potential legal proceedings against FIFA and Infantino over the proposal and related matters. England and Wales subsequently withdrew their support for Infantino's re-election as FIFA president in the days following his abandonment of the World Cup plan.
