1933 GEORGE V PENNY VALUED AT £72,000 DRAWS COLLECTOR ATTENTION

MON 03 AUG 2026

The 1933 George V penny has been identified as the rarest penny in UK history, with one example selling for £72,000 at auction in London hosted by A.H Baldwin & Sons. According to coin collector @CoinCollectingWizard on Instagram, only six authentic examples are known to exist. The coins were struck primarily for ceremonial purposes and were not released into general circulation, making discovery in everyday change unlikely.

The 1933 penny is described as the "crown jewel of British coin collecting". Other variations of the coin have commanded estimates exceeding £130,000 at auction. The coin's rarity and value have generated significant collector interest, with experts recommending that households check their change for rare coins of various types, including the Kew Gardens 50p and Atlantic Salmon 50p.

A substantial number of counterfeit versions of the 1933 penny are believed to exist, created over decades since the coin's fame spread among collectors. Anyone who believes they have found an authentic example is advised to seek professional examination by a specialist before attempting to sell or value the coin. The collector cautioned that finding a genuine 1933 penny in circulation would be "like winning the lottery twice".
