ASTRAZENECA CONSIDERS MERGER WITH BRISTOL MYERS SQUIBB

MON 03 AUG 2026 COMPANIES

AstraZeneca is considering a merger with Bristol Myers Squibb in a potential deal that would value the combined company at approximately $400 billion, according to reporting on Sunday. The companies have been discussing the merger over recent months, sources told the Financial Times. Neither AstraZeneca nor Bristol Myers Squibb commented immediately on the reports. It remains unclear whether the deal will be completed.

The proposed merger would rank among the largest in corporate history. AstraZeneca, a British pharmaceutical company, has seen its share price more than quadruple during Pascal Soriot's tenure as chief executive officer, outperforming the wider FTSE 100 index and rival GSK. The company last year announced plans for a direct U.S. listing to capitalise on stronger valuations in the American market whilst remaining listed in London. AstraZeneca's second-quarter results showed strong demand for cancer and rare disease treatments, with cancer drugs generating approximately $25 billion in sales in 2025, nearly half of total revenue.

Bristol Myers Squibb has pursued an acquisition strategy that has strengthened its position in cancer treatment, having purchased seven companies since October 2007. The potential merger would come approximately 12 years after AstraZeneca successfully resisted a takeover bid from a larger U.S. competitor. Sources cautioned that discussions may not result in a completed transaction, and it remains unclear whether talks are currently ongoing.
