SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY OPENS TO $927M GLOBALLY
Spider-Man: Brand New Day generated $927m in worldwide ticket sales during its opening weekend, making it the second-largest opening in cinema history. The film earned $355m in the United States and Canada, placing it behind only Avengers: Endgame's $357m domestic debut in 2019 (figures not adjusted for inflation). Internationally, the film grossed $572m, with China accounting for $121m and Australia recording $30.4m. Tom Holland stars in his fourth outing as the web-slinging superhero, with Zendaya co-starring as Mary Jane Watson.
The film depicts Peter Parker fighting crime in a world that has forgotten his Spider-Man identity, exploring themes of loneliness and human connection. Director Destin Daniel Cretton oversaw a production with a reported budget of $225m, not including marketing costs. The opening day in North America reached $168m from 4,487 theatres, surpassing Avengers: Endgame's Friday opening of $157m. According to audience exit polls, ticket buyers were predominantly male (approximately 61%) and predominantly under the age of 25 (slightly over half).
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the opening as "a truly phenomenal" result. Tom Rothman, chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Motion Picture Group, characterised the film as fundamentally about friendship and connection. The release comes as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and Toy Story 5 remain in cinemas. Marvel Studios now holds four of the five largest global openings of all time: Avengers: Endgame ($1.22bn), Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($927m), Avengers: Infinity War ($640m) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600m).
