LEBRON JAMES JOINS 76ERS; ANALYSTS QUESTION IMPACT ON EDGECOMBE

SUN 02 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

LeBron James has joined the Philadelphia 76ers, a move that has prompted commentary from former NBA players regarding its effect on the team's younger roster. VJ Edgecombe, who broke James's 22-year-old rookie record by scoring 14 points in the opening quarter of his first NBA game last October, now shares a locker room with the 41-year-old player. Kwame Brown, a former Philadelphia player, stated on his podcast that Edgecombe "is in trouble" given the new dynamics of the roster.

Edgecombe averaged 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists across 75 games in his rookie season, finished third in Rookie of the Year voting, and made the All-Rookie First Team. Brown argued that the 20-year-old's offensive opportunities may be significantly reduced, noting that Jaylen Brown, now in the starting five, averaged 21.7 shots per game with the Boston Celtics last season compared with 13.9 for the player he replaced. With James, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey all commanding offensive possessions, Brown contended that Edgecombe's usage would necessarily shrink. Draymond Green made a similar assessment on his podcast, suggesting that Edgecombe's role had changed from "sometimes the second option" to "sometimes the fifth option".

The 76ers roster now includes multiple high-usage players competing for offensive touches. Both Brown and Green raised questions about whether the team's structure would limit the development and opportunities of its youngest contributors. No statement from the 76ers, James, Edgecombe or his representatives has been reported in response to these analyses.
