AUTOPSY REVEALS EXTENT OF INJURIES IN MONTEREY BAY SHARK ATTACK

SAT 01 AUG 2026 CRIME

Post-mortem results have detailed the injuries sustained by Erica Fox, a 55-year-old triathlete, who died following a shark attack in Monterey Bay, California, in December 2025. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner's Office established that Fox died from sharp and blunt-force injuries and submersion in water caused by the attack. Fox disappeared on 21 December 2025 whilst swimming with the Kelp Krawlers, an open-water swimming collective she had helped establish, near Lovers Point in Pacific Grove.

Fox was a seasoned athlete who had competed in half-Ironman competitions and the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon for nearly 20 years. Witnesses reported seeing a large shark break through the water surface, with one emergency caller describing what appeared to be a person held in the creature's jaws before it descended. The 14 other swimmers in the group, including Fox's husband Jean-Francois Vanreusel, returned to shore. A comprehensive 15-hour search operation involving helicopters, vessels and rescue divers followed, though initial recovery efforts were unsuccessful.

Fox's remains were discovered six days later, washed ashore near Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz County, approximately 25 miles from where she was last seen, with portions of her wetsuit still intact. The coroner's report documents the extraordinary force exerted during the attack. The findings bring closure to the investigation into her disappearance after months of inquiry.
