EMMA FINUCANE WINS GOLD IN 1,000M TIME TRIAL AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Emma Finucane won gold in the women's 1,000m time trial at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, clocking one minute 05.285 seconds. The event made its Games debut this year. Finucane's victory guarantees her at least three gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games, making her the first Welsh woman to achieve this feat. The 23-year-old Olympic gold medallist has one race remaining — the women's keirin on Sunday — where a further gold would establish her as the most successful Welsh woman in Commonwealth Games history.
Finucane won team sprint gold on Thursday and repeated the achievement in the individual sprint on Friday, prior to her time trial victory. England's Sophie Capewell and New Zealand's Ellesse Andrews both failed to match Finucane's time in the time trial. Her teammate Megan Barker, who typically competes in endurance events, finished fifth with a time of one minute 06.345 seconds. Finucane represents Carmarthen.
The cyclist's three golds at these Games surpass the previous record for Welsh women at a single Commonwealth Games. Her performance comes as she continues her track cycling career following Olympic success. The keirin final on Sunday will provide Finucane the opportunity to become the most decorated Welsh female athlete at the Games.
