WEMBANYAMA SIGNS NIKE EXTENSION, RECEIVES SIGNATURE SHOE LINE
Victor Wembanyama has signed a long-term contract extension with Nike that includes his first signature shoe line, the Nike Wemby 1. The San Antonio Spurs star, who is 22 years old, secured the deal before his original Nike agreement was set to expire in October 2026. Nike announced the partnership with a cinematic social media teaser featuring a cosmic explosion converging into a stylised "VW" logo shaped like an alien head, which replaces the unofficial alien graphic the company used during his first two seasons.
Wembanyama's signature shoe deal follows a successful 2025-26 season in which he won Defensive Player of the Year and led San Antonio to the NBA Finals. He has completed three NBA seasons and achieved Rookie of the Year, two All-Star selections and a Defensive Player of the Year award. The shoe line announcement comes weeks after Wembanyama signed a five-year, $252 million extension with the Spurs to remain with the franchise. Nike issued a statement describing him as "one of the most unique and influential athletes in the world" and a "generational talent".
The signature shoe represents a significant milestone in basketball endorsements. Michael Jordan's shoe deal with Nike, established early in his Chicago Bulls career, set a precedent for the brand's approach to signing marquee athletes to signature lines. A number of high-profile basketball stars have since received their own shoes through Nike, though such deals remain selective markers of commercial prominence in professional basketball.
