GIANTS SUSPEND BADER'S PAY AFTER SCOOTER CRASH INJURES FOOT

SAT 01 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

The San Francisco Giants announced Friday that they are withholding payment to outfielder Harrison Bader following a scooter accident that worsened an existing left foot injury. Bader was ruled out for the season on Thursday after the crash occurred early Sunday morning near Balboa Cafe in San Francisco's Marina District. According to reports, Bader collided with a San Francisco Fire Department fire engine, and the vehicle's wheel rolled over his foot. The Giants stated in a statement attributed to president of baseball operations Buster Posey that they were still investigating the accident but would suspend payment until Bader could resume performing services for the club.

Bader had been sidelined with plantar fasciitis and was scheduled to meet with a specialist in Indianapolis on Monday to evaluate his progress when the accident occurred. One report indicated that Bader had been seen drinking in bars in multiple neighbourhoods before the crash. Giants manager expressed doubt on Thursday that Bader's return would have been likely even without the accident, citing the severity of the plantar fasciitis condition. Bader signed a two-year contract worth $20.5 million with the Giants in free agency last offseason and had not played since May 29.

The withholding of payment is expected to trigger a grievance filing through the MLB Players Association, a procedure that typically occurs when teams unilaterally suspend player salaries. This marks the second significant scooter-related incident in Bader's career; he was suspended for 19 games from his college team following an earlier incident in which he allegedly struck a parked Ford F-150 on an early Sunday morning.
