NEWCASTLE MAKE INQUIRY ABOUT ATALANTA DEFENDER SCALVINI
Newcastle United have made inquiries about signing Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta ahead of the arrival of Matthias Jaissle as manager, according to reports. Jaissle is expected to replace Eddie Howe, who left his position earlier this week. Tottenham Hotspur have also checked on the Italian defender's availability, a report from Tuttomercatoweb.com claims. Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season and will not compete in European competition under Jaissle's first campaign in charge.
Atalanta have made clear they will not sell Scalvini for less than €50 million (£42.7m), the report states. The 22-year-old is regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in Serie A and was part of Atalanta's Europa League-winning squad in 2024. Manager Maurizio Sarri views him as a key defensive asset, which the club believes will make a deal difficult to broker. Scalvini scored three goals in Serie A last season and has earned recognition for his performances at set pieces.
Newcastle's interest in Scalvini forms part of a broader recruitment drive by the club. Replacing midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who is widely expected to move to Arsenal, is stated as a priority for the incoming manager. The Tyneside club's supporters have called for the board to demonstrate ambition in the transfer market. Only a substantial offer is likely to convince Atalanta to part with one of their most important players, according to the report.
