TENERIFE IMPOSES WILDFIRE RESTRICTIONS AS TEMPERATURES SOAR

FRI 31 JUL 2026

Tenerife's Island Council has introduced emergency measures to restrict activities across the island from 8am on Thursday, July 30, as wildfire risk surges during a period of extreme heat. The restrictions, which remain in place until fire danger eases, include closures of campsites and recreational areas, along with suspended access to certain forest tracks and organised events in affected zones. Visitors to rural areas may encounter restrictions affecting popular viewpoints, walking routes and mountain drives. The Island Council divided the island into two wildfire risk levels, with different restrictions applying to each zone.

Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts very high temperatures across the region, with some areas in Tenerife expected to reach 36°C on Friday. The hazardous conditions are compounded by calima—Saharan dust carried on hot, dry air—which can create a hazy and stifling atmosphere. Officials have urged anyone planning to visit the mountains, stop for picnics in forested areas or visit well-known beauty spots to check the latest guidance before travelling, as restrictions vary by location.

The Island Council issued the clampdown in response to sharply increased chances of blazes during the hot, dry spell. Travellers should monitor official sources for zone-specific restrictions, as holiday plans involving the countryside may be significantly affected during the period of elevated fire risk.
